- Digital device #AlerteBacklash: countering anti-rights movements

Equipe Hope - a group of young volunteers from Equipop in Paris - is launching #AlerteBacklash. This digital device aims to counter anti-rights, conservative and masculinist movements.

The overturning of Roe v. Wade, which guaranteed the right to abortion in the United States, the systematic denial of Afghan women's rights by the Taliban, and the proliferation of anti-LGBTQIA+ laws in Eastern Europe... All over the world, anti-rights, conservative, and masculinist movements are on the rise. In their report "Women's Rights: Fighting the Backlash" published in February 2023, Equipop and the Jean-Jaurès Foundation warn of attacks by anti-rights movements. This report aims to provoke a political wake-up call and presents recommendations for building effective feminist foreign policies.

However, this surge must not be confined to the political sphere. With anti-rights movements fully organized on social media to wage war on the rights of women and LGBTQIA+ people, it is essential that feminist civil society mobilize.

Team Hope is launching the digital initiative #AlerteBacklash. Its goal is simple: to use this hashtag to share news stories denouncing any rollback of women's and LGBTQIA+ rights.

The purpose of this system is not to relay information that is itself anti-rights. We encourage you to avoid increasing the visibility of sexist or LGBTphobic media, individuals, or organizations.

For example:

  • An article condemns the exclusion of Afghan girls from school → #BacklashAlert

  • A TV show discusses attacks on abortion rights → #BacklashAlert

  • A video warning about the ban on discussing gender and sexual orientation in schools in the United States → #BacklashAlert

Thanks to a kit put together by Equipop and its volunteers, this tool can be used by anyone who wants to highlight this sexist phenomenon on a global scale and push French public authorities to take action in favor of human rights.

You want to:

  • interview the founders of #AlerteBacklash
  • Interview with Lucie Daniel, author of the report and advocacy officer for Equipop
  • get the #BacklashAlert kit
  • have illustrations available
