The overturning of Roe v. Wade, which guaranteed the right to abortion in the United States, the systematic denial of Afghan women's rights by the Taliban, and the proliferation of anti-LGBTQIA+ laws in Eastern Europe: anti-rights, conservative, and masculinist movements are on the rise around the world.

The Hope Team launches the #AlerteBacklash initiative to collectively denounce backlash and call on France to take action.

The backlash
It could be translated as "backlash." American journalist Susan Faludi first used the term to describe the actions of conservative and masculinist movements that react violently whenever women's rights and LGBTQIA+ rights make new advances. For more information, see the report by Equipop and the Jean-Jaurès Foundation , "Women's Rights: Fighting the Backlash," whichrecommends that France:
  • Increase funding for feminist associations and movements;
  • Defend and protect feminist activists and networks;
  • Make feminist struggles a priority diplomatic issue in Europe and around the world.

What information to relay:

News stories on Instagram or Twitter denouncing a setback for women's and LGBTQIA+ rights, for example:

  • An article condemns the exclusion of Afghan girls from school → #BacklashAlert
  • A TV show discusses attacks on abortion rights → #BacklashAlert
  • A video warning about the ban on discussing gender and sexual orientation in schools in the United States → #BacklashAlert
  The purpose of this system is not to relay information that is itself anti-rights. We encourage you to avoid increasing the visibility of sexist or LGBTphobic media, individuals, or organizations.
