– Warkha TV: Senegal's first platform for producing feminist content

Warkha TV is a web channel that produces podcasts and videos on topics related to women's rights with a feminist approach. Through its work, Warkha TV deconstructs stereotypes and campaigns for gender equality in Senegal and beyond. Warkha TV was born out of Fatou Warkha Sambe's passion for digital media and her desire to create impactful content. As her work gained recognition, Fatou Warkha Sambe realized the importance of fighting gender-based injustices and bringing a feminist perspective to journalism. This conviction truly came to fruition in 2018. Many of the topics covered by Warkha TV focus on violence against women, including rape and femicide. The organization addresses issues surrounding the treatment of these topics and how they are debated in the public sphere.

"Warkha TV played an important role in the advocacy campaign for the law criminalizing rape in Senegal, by broadcasting live coverage of activist actions and helping to make feminist voices heard." Fatou Warkha Sambe, founder of Warkha TV

FOCUS ON THE 16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM One of Warkha TV's flagship initiatives is its "16 Days of Activism" campaign, which will celebrate its fifth anniversary in 2023. This annual event sparks discussions on various topics related to gender-based and sexual violence, such as rape culture and the specific vulnerability of people with disabilities or HIV-positive individuals. Through interviews, web series, and reports, Warkha TV deconstructs social norms and challenges stereotypes. Last year, following the "Feminist Caravans of Community Discussions," Wharkha TV decided to meet with women and girls in rural areas, particularly in Louga and Tambacounda, to highlight their actions and mobilization for women's rights.

Equipop's sisterly support Warkha TV benefited from Equipop's support through two years of funding for its "16 Days of Activism" campaign. This support enabled the team to travel outside the capital and gain visibility. Beyond the financial aspect, the partnership with Equipop offered Warkha TV opportunities for networking and exchanging experiences and knowledge, particularly through the 2022 Feminist Agora. For the future Through the creation of educational and informative content and collaborations with other organizations, Warkha TV aims to highlight the injustice, violence, and patriarchy present in society. Its ultimate goal is to raise awareness of these issues and contribute to positive social change. It wants to establish itself as a platform of support for the feminist movement, in particular by relaying the actions of other organizations. It also aspires to replicate its model in other African countries, seeking funding so that it can be present without local organizations having to bear the costs. Its vision includes interregional collaboration and the collective creation of feminist knowledge. One of Fatou Warkha Sambe's dreams is to organize a three-month feminist writing residency as part of the platform.

"The Agora allowed me to meet exceptional people and provided me with a space for activist well-being."
