– The role of the media in addressing sexual and gender-based violence

This Thursday, June 24, Equipop invites you to join us at 12:20 p.m. GMT+2 (Paris)/10:20 a.m. GMT for a discussion with journalists from four countries and three continents on the role of the media in combating gender-based violence. To follow the event, go to Twitch by clicking here.   The media plays a pivotal role in social representations. Words and language can be powerful factors in perpetuating gender-based violence (GBV). But the media, and journalists in particular, can be driving forces in the fight against GBV: through the topics they cover, the way they are treated, the drafting of charters or codes of good practice, etc. Journalists from four countries will share their visions and initiatives on Thursday during a panel discussion organized by Equipop.   Professionals share theirexperiences Equipop will bring together journalists and media professionals from several continents to answer the question, "What role do the media play in addressing sexual and gender-based violence?." In Senegal, sociologist and journalist Codou Bop has been working for several decades on the issue of women in the media (the representation of women in newsrooms, the evolution of media discourse on violence against women in Senegal, etc.). Laura Caniggia is the creator of Punto Género, the first gender program on Argentine television. She also produced content for the documentary Que sea Ley, about the fight for abortion rights in Argentina. A journalist for 20 years, Liz Ford is deputy editor of the Guardian's global development desk. She specializes in women's rights and gender equality. Finally, Titiou Lecoq, a freelance journalist and blogger, who regularly contributes to Girls and Geeks and Slate.fr, will address the more specific issue of online media and digital violence (harassment, pressure, etc.). The meeting will be moderated by Aurélie Gal-Régniez, executive director of Equipop.   An event of the Feminist World Tour: 24 hours to end violence One week before the launch of the Generation Equality Forum, the Feminist World Tour: 24 hours to end violence brings together feminists from every continent for a series of activist events. It is the culmination of the #StopTalkingStartFunding campaigncampaign, which aims to call on the heads of state participating in the GEF to make real financial commitments to end gender-based violence. This campaign is led by the collectives Nous Toutes and Générations Féministes—of which Equipop is a member.   Click here to join us during the 24 hours of the Feminist World Tour – from June 23 at 3 p.m. GMT+2 (Paris) to June 24 at 3 p.m. GMT+2 (Paris).
