– Feminists in Action: a support mechanism for feminist organizations in the Global South

The Feminists in Action project was officially launched in early February 2022 at the Cité Audacieuse by CARE France, Equipop, Oxfam France, the Fund for Women in the Mediterranean (FFMed), the Fund for Francophone Women (XOESE), and the Pananetugri Initiative for Women's Well-being (IPBF). The launch of Feminists in Action was an opportunity for guests to take a strong stance: Ms. Elisabeth Moreno, Minister Delegate to the Prime Minister, responsible for Equal Opportunities, and Mr. Bertrand Walckenaer, Deputy Director General of the French Development Agency.

Why support feminist organizations?

According to the Association for Women’s Rights in Development (AWID), organizations working for women’s rights receive only 0.13% of official development assistance (ODA) and only 0.4% of all aid related to gender issues.    However, feminist movements are, among all civil society movements, those that have made the most progress in our societies. It is mainly their mobilization that, for example, has led to changes in policies on violence against women, both nationally and transnationally.    "Feminist movements are the ones that have made the most progress in our societies, the ones that have most disrupted social relations. It is essential to support organizations that fight every day for a more egalitarian world!" emphasized Wendyam Micheline Kabore, Executive Director of the Pananetugri Initiative for Women's Well-being (IPBF).

A program for feminist organizations in the Global South

Despite the essential role played by feminist civil society organizations (CSOs) in building a harmonious society, they receive little support. Indeed, they have limited financial resources. This is mainly because financial resources are often inaccessible, as they are subject to requirements that most feminist CSOs are unable to meet.    In this context, feminist funds have been established in recent decades to provide feminist organizations with the financial, human, material, and often organizational resources they need to implement their vision and encourage other donors to support them.    The crisis linked to the COVID-19 pandemic and its consequences on gender inequality has shown that it is essential to provide women with secure, flexible, and predictable funding to enable them to cope with this crisis and all its repercussions.   Based on this observation, the Feminists in Action project was launched for a period of four years with a total budget of €15 million to support the transformative power of feminist organizations in the Global South in favor of a more egalitarian world. Implemented in 31 countries around the world, this project establishes a system of funding, capacity building, and networking for feminist organizations in the Global South.
