– VBG: From awareness raising to capacity building for victims

From September 1 to 3, 2021, the NGO Voix de Femmes organized the second training session for 50 women who are victims of gender-based violence (GBV) and beneficiaries of income-generating activities (IGAs). The main objective is to strengthen the capacities of these women and girls who are victims of gender-based violence (GBV) in financial education and microfinance management.   As part of the implementation of the project activities: “Women's rights and health in Burkina Faso: Preventing and reducing vulnerabilities in the context of the COVID-19 crisis and post-crisis periodFifty women and girls were trained to strengthen their economic activities. Coming from 10 markets and 20 bus stations in the neighborhoods of Ouagadougou, they attended three days of presentations on GBV and women's rights. The training also reviewed COVID-19 prevention measures, which have had an economic and social impact on their lives. In addition, they received training on techniques and methods for managing their income-generating activities. For this capacity-building activity, facilitators from the NGO Voix de femme, with technical support from Equipop, identified 200 women and girls (all victims of GBV). Prior to this, awareness-raising sessions on violence and COVID-19 were held for these women and girls, who were selected on the basis of references from the facilitators.

Financial education for greater independence
During this second training session, women and girls shared their experiences and received guidance on financial education. According to Aminata Traoré, a beneficiary, it is very satisfying to have this support. She says that the project comes at just the right time to improve their living conditions. “Women face many difficulties and are victims of various forms of violence, yet they often force themselves to remain silent. And very often they struggle to make ends meet in their businesses. We were really looking forward to this project.she added.  After completing the work, the girls and women received support from staff at the Caisse Populaire de Dapoya (located in Ouagadougou) to open and update savings accounts. They will each receive 50,000 CFA francs to boost their finances and help their SGI thrive.
