– SEN DA YA FOO: A WHATSAPP PLATFORM FOR REPORTING VIOLATIONS OF THE RIGHTS OF YOUNG PEOPLE AND TEENAGERS

The challenge of the project Sen Da Ya Foo project is to raise awareness about respecting the rights of young people and adolescents in terms of reproductive health/family planning (RH/FP). The WhatsApp tool developed as part of this project highlights cases where young people and adolescents are denied access to services and information, and holds authorities accountable for their commitments to ensuring their well-being.

Services and information not accessible to young people

In Burkina Faso, young people and adolescents face challenges in terms of sexual and reproductive health. This is reflected in the age of marriage: 6% of girls aged 15-19 are married before the age of 15 (EDS 2010), the low rate of contraceptive use, which is only 15.3% (EDS 2010), and the inadequacy of the advice provided.. These situations arise in particular because many people do not have access to high-quality services and information.    Based on this observation, the consortium Alliance for Rights and Health  Burkina Faso, composed of the association SOS Jeunesse et Défis (lead partner), the association Songui Manégré/Aide au Développement Endogène (ASMADE) and the World March of Women (MMF), mobilized their partners during an incubation workshop to reflect on the sexual and reproductive rights and health of young people and adolescents. These discussions led to the implementation of a strategy to collect cases of violations of rights of access to SRHR services and information.

An innovative data collection system to make a difference

The system developed as part of this project is innovative. Information will be collected using the WhatsApp social network as well as radio and digital campaigns. (#TellAll)) to enable victims or witnesses of rights violations to access services and information about the SSRAJ and to file a report. Individuals will then be referred to organizations for support and resolution of their situation. Following the three-month phase of collecting various testimonies, the data will be capitalized on and used to conduct an advocacy campaign targeting decision-makers to ensure compliance with the texts, laws, and commitments made for better access to DSSRAJ services.    The project will be implemented in the Central (Ouagadougou) and Central-West (Koudougou, Léo) regions. Stakeholders are heavily involved in this project, which will raise awareness among authorities of the need to uphold the rights of young people and adolescents, but also to improve their knowledge of sexuality and reproduction.
