– “What will happen when the world looks away?”

We must remain mobilized in support of Afghan women and activists

Several European countries, including France, have planned to end their evacuation operations in Kabul, following confirmation of the withdrawal of US troops on August 31. “What will happen when the world looks away?" asks Pashtana Durrani, an Afghan teacher who campaigns for girls' education. The international community, and in particular countries such as France that promote feminist diplomacy, must ensure that attention does not wane. Protecting and supporting activists in Afghanistan and around the world must be and remain a priority.

Since the Taliban arrived in Kabul, numerous calls for feminist solidarity have been made around the world. In France, several collectives have called for the evacuation and reception of Afghan women and activists attempting to leave the country, for example through this petition initiated by Pourvoir Féministe and signed by Equipop.

As evacuations draw to a close, the international community must continue to mobilize. It is imperative to ensure dignified reception conditions in third countries for exfiltrated activists and their loved ones, as well as for Afghan women in danger who will continue to flee the country in the weeks and months to come. It is also crucial to maintain and strengthen support for Afghan feminist associations and activists on the ground. They have been on the front line in Afghanistan in defending human rights and will continue to be so. These activists must be protected and supported. Equipop joins feminist funds in calling for flexible funding, based on trust and responsive to local needs and realities, for them and their networks.

The situation in Afghanistan reminds us, if we needed reminding, that every day, women and men risk their lives around the world to defend human rights in crisis situations. It also reminds us that women human rights defenders are particularly vulnerable because of their gender. It is time for the international community, in conjunction with the relevant UN agencies, to recognize the commitment of these women, the dangers they face, and the social progress they are bringing about. These women human rights defenders must be protected, supported, and given a voice in all negotiation and peace processes. Thanks to the work of activist networks and the international community, we know what levers need to be activated. Now it is time to take action.
