– Feminists in Action: writing to share

September 20–22, 2023 – As part of the Feminists in Action (FEA) project, a workshop was held in Saly bringing together eight organizations from Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, and Senegal. Equipop is continuing its support for these organizations as they capitalize on the key experiences of their project. This is an opportunity for them to develop inter-organizational links, learn from each other's experiences, and evaluate their progress since receiving support from Equipop.

Different projects, but with common key challenges

The FEA project aims to support the transformative power of feminist organizations in the Global South. The capitalization led by Equipop therefore aims to promote the transfer of knowledge and experience between organizations supported through FEA. With this in mind, this workshop was a valuable opportunity for sharing. The organizations present (Fondation des Jeunes Amazones pour le Développement, Jeunes Filles Actrices de Développement, Voix de Femmes, Taafé Vision, Stop au chat noir, Association of Women Lawyers of Côte d'Ivoire, ABOYA and West African Network of Young Women Leaders/ Senegal) were able to discuss their respective projects and present the flagship experiences they each wish to capitalize on. In addition, the organizations worked to identify cross-cutting themes in their projects, debating their experiences, seeing what resonated with their own practices, and discussing the best way to overcome obstacles in order to be more efficient in the field. At the end of the discussions, the following themes were selected:
  • the fight against gender-based violence in universities,
  • women's empowerment,
  • “artivism” against gender-based violence
  • and community participation.
The analyses relating to the selected themes will enable the contextualization of the capitalization sheets presenting the flagship experiences and facilitate their appropriation by organizations wishing to carry out similar activities.

Self-assessment and outlook

This workshop provided an opportunity for organizations to conduct a self-assessment of their own empowerment journey following the support provided by the FEA project.. This exercise enabled them to take stock of their achievements (skills, equipment, etc.) and the changes observed within their organization. “FEA has enabled Taafé Vision to grow, to have a headquarters, a creative space for women in film and all women artists, a space that will allow them to flourish." according to Azaratou Bancé (President of the Taafé Vision association, Burkina Faso).    The next step for each organization will be to finalize its capitalization sheet and analyses relating to the selected themes before they are widely disseminated to actors working in West Africa on gender-based violence.
